Terms and conditions

Last updated 15 October 2026

Free Trees is a friendly, free community project. These terms are here to keep it that way. By using this website you agree to them.

Who runs Free Trees

Free Trees is run by System Two. You can contact us at [email protected].

It's free

Using the site, growing trees and taking trees are all free. Trees are gifts between neighbours. Nobody is buying or selling anything.

Growing trees

  • Please grow trees from seeds you've gathered locally, such as acorns, conkers and hazelnuts. Native trees are best.
  • Put out one or two trees at a time, somewhere that doesn't block the pavement.
  • You decide what you put out and when. You're not obliged to give a tree to anyone.

Taking trees

  • Please take one tree at a time, and only to plant locally.
  • Trees are not for selling on.
  • Trees are given as they are. Neither the grower nor System Two promises that any tree is healthy, a particular kind or will survive.

Planting trees

You are responsible for where you plant. Before you dig, please make sure:

  • You have the landowner's permission, or the land is somewhere you're allowed to plant
  • The spot is well away from buildings, walls, drains, pipes and cables
  • The tree won't block a path, a road, a driveway or a driver's view as it grows
  • It isn't on a protected site, or anywhere wildflowers or other plants are being looked after

Take care near roads, wear gloves and don't dig where there might be buried cables or pipes. If you're unsure, choose another spot.

Landowners and councils may move or remove trees planted on their land. That's their right.

Your photos and notes

  • You keep ownership of any photos and notes you add.
  • By adding them, you let us show them on Free Trees and use them to tell people about the project, with credit to your first name where we can.
  • Only add photos you took yourself or have permission to share.
  • Please don't include people's faces, car number plates or house numbers.
  • Nothing rude, unkind, unlawful or unrelated to the trees, please.

We may remove anything that breaks these rules, and we may remove any tree, photo or note at any time.

Using the site

  • Please give honest information. Only log trees you have actually planted.
  • Don't try to break, overload or misuse the site.
  • We may change, pause or close the site at any time.

Our responsibility

We provide the site and the tree map as they are, and we can't promise they will always be available or correct.

As far as the law allows, System Two is not responsible for any loss or damage that comes from using the site, or from growing, taking or planting trees, including damage caused by a tree or its roots.

Nothing in these terms limits our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit.

Privacy

Our privacy policy explains what information we collect and how we use it.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms, we'll update them here and change the date at the top.
